Marion Roberts studied at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) where she completed her B.Mus Hons Degree in Solo Voice under Petrus van Heerden.
She commenced her career at the Spoornet State Theatre with The Black Tie Ensemble during which time she made her Debút as Frasquitta in “Carmen” . A year later she was welcomed into the Opera Studio of the Cape Town Opera and during her two years with the Studio she sang the roles of Esmeralda, Morgana, Queen of the Night, Fiordiligi and Adele.
Marion concentrates on several Genres and studied with her teacher Virginia Oosthuizen on Lieder interpretation as well as the Style of Italian Bel Canto Opera. Marion’s versatile voice enables her to vary her career with Opera, Lieder and Church Music. She excels in Oratoria, Lieder Recitals and Opera, Operetta.
In 2006 and 2007 Marion had several Live Radio Perfomances in South Africa of J.S. Bach’s St. Johns Passion and G.F. Handel “Messiah”. She was also priviledged to perform in several Gala Concerts seen on National Television with Maestro Richard Cock and the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra.
In 2003 she was semi-finalist in the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship for Singers and was awarded Best Singer in the Opera Category.In 2007 she sang the coveted role of Queen of the Night for the National Production of W.A. Mozart’s “Zauberflöte” under Directorship of World Renowned Artist William Kentridge with the Co-producting team of Theatre La Monnaie, Brussels.
In October 2008 she was Semi Finalist in the Iris Adami Corradetti International Singing Competition in Italy. She has also received her first International Contract to sing Queen of the Night for the Aix-en-Provence 2009 in France with world renowned Conductor Rene Jacobs and Director William Kentridge.
Since August 2009 Marion has developed a steady Lyrical Soprano Fach, and now boasts the beautiful roles of the Italian, German and Bel Canto Operas such as Mimi “La Bohéme”, Nedda “Pagliacci”, Michaëla “Carmen” and Agathe “Der Freischütz”. A truly exciting year awaits her as this new Voice Fach settles into it’s true nature. A more powerful voice with more powerful Repertoire options takes time to settle and she is working closely with Repetiteur/Coach Reinild Mees in Amsterdam.
Marion will finish her new Repertoire studies in September 2010, and will be auditioning extensively in September, October and November 2010. Marion’s home is in the Hague, Netherlands where she lives with her Fiancé Werner Spreeuwenberg.
